Chubby FIRE

What is Chubby FIRE? Chubby FIRE is the comfortable middle ground between Lean and Fat FIRE, an annual spending target of roughly $80,000 to $120,000 per household, that funds upper-middle-class living without the capital demands of luxury. It is the sweet spot many dual-income professionals actually aim for once they crunch their real numbers.

Worked example: $100,000/year in expenses × 25x = $2,500,000 FI Number. On a $180,000 household income with a 40% savings rate and 7% real returns, the timeline is roughly 18 years, splitting the difference between Lean (~14 years at $625K) and Fat (~24 years at $3.75M). Chubby FIRE typically accommodates occasional travel, private school or tutoring, one late-model car, and moderate dining out without rigid frugality.

The advantage of Chubby is psychological robustness: spending flex exists in both directions. In a bear market, cutting $15K of discretionary spending drops the effective FI number materially without feeling like deprivation. Chubby FIRE is what most “regular successful” FIRE practitioners land on, it is Fat’s lifestyle with Lean’s discipline.
