Free FI Calculator

Retire earlier by choosing where to live

Most FIRE calculators only ask how much you save. Ours asks where you live, and shows how relocating can move your financial independence date forward by years.

No sign-up required to run the calculator. Takes about two minutes.

Why this is not a generic FIRE calculator

Where you live changes the math. Most tools ignore that. We make it the core of the calculation.

  • Geo-arbitrage is built in

Your target number is not fixed. Living costs differ wildly between cities, so we recalculate your FIRE date against real cost-of-living data instead of a single national average.

  • Built to help you choose where to live

Most calculators hand you a single number and stop there. This one compares locations side by side, so you finish with something you can act on: where to live to reach independence sooner.

  • Risk flags, not tax advice

We surface relocation considerations and risk flags to research before you move. We are a planning tool, not a tax or financial advisor, and this is not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is FIRE and what is my FI number?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FI number is the amount of invested money you need so that its returns can cover your living expenses indefinitely, meaning you no longer have to work for income.
How is the FI number calculated?
The common approach is to take your expected annual expenses and divide by your safe withdrawal rate. At a 4% rate that means roughly 25 times your yearly spending. IndepAI adjusts the expenses side for the local cost of living and currency so the target is realistic for your situation.
What is a safe withdrawal rate?
A safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can take out each year and reasonably expect the money to last through retirement. The often-cited figure is 4%, which is where the rule of thumb of needing 25 times your annual expenses comes from.
Does the 4% rule work outside the US?
The 4% rule comes from research on US market history and US retirees. Outside the US, different market returns, inflation, taxes, and currency movements can make it too optimistic or too cautious. Treat it as a starting point and adjust the withdrawal rate for your own country and risk tolerance.
How long will it take me to reach FIRE?
It depends mostly on your savings rate, the gap between income and expenses, and your investment returns. The higher the share of income you save, the sooner you reach your number. The calculator estimates the years remaining based on the figures you enter.
