What is Die With Zero? Die With Zero is a retirement philosophy, popularized by Bill Perkins’ book of the same name, arguing that maximum life utility comes from spending your wealth at the right life stages and ideally arriving at death with zero remaining, rather than hoarding assets you will never enjoy. It is a deliberate counterweight to FIRE’s savings-maximization culture.
Worked example: a traditional retiree dies at 88 with $1.2M unspent, wealth that would have funded memorable experiences at 55–70 when mobility and health were peak. Die With Zero suggests front-loading spending on travel, family experiences, and bucket-list goals during the “golden years” of early retirement, then buying annuities or longevity insurance in your 70s to cover residual life risk. The net result is more joy per lifetime dollar.
The philosophy does not conflict with FIRE, it refines the “RE” part. Rather than hitting 25x and never spending more, Die With Zero advocates higher withdrawal rates (4.5–6%) in early retirement paired with structured longevity protection. It is especially resonant for child-free FIRE practitioners without bequest motives.
