Barista FIRE

What is Barista FIRE? Barista FIRE is a semi-retired state in which your portfolio covers most but not all of your expenses, and you work part-time, historically at a job like Starbucks that offers healthcare, to bridge the gap. It is a hybrid between full FIRE and traditional employment, prized for its balance of freedom and benefits.

Worked example: annual expenses of $50,000, a part-time job paying $20,000 after taxes plus employer health insurance worth $8,000/year. Your portfolio needs to cover only $22,000/year, giving a Barista FI Number of $22,000 ÷ 4% = $550,000, roughly 44% of a full FIRE number of $1,250,000. You hit freedom nearly a decade earlier and keep the social structure plus healthcare that pure FIRE demands you replace.

Barista FIRE is particularly popular in the US where ACA premiums and out-of-pocket costs make DIY healthcare expensive. Globally, it works anywhere a low-stress job covers the marginal expenses your portfolio cannot yet fund. The tradeoff: you remain tied to an employer, even if loosely.
